A Practical Study Session With Recall, Spacing and Worked Examples

A useful study session has a clear task and a way to check what you understand. That might involve reading an explanation, looking at a worked example, answering questions without notes and correcting your answers. The mix depends on what you are learning and what help you need.

This guide offers an adaptable session plan. It does not promise that a particular number of hours will beat another routine or produce a particular exam result.

Decide what you need to practise

Choose a small part of your course and identify what you need to do with it. Do you need to recall definitions, explain a relationship, interpret a source or solve a type of problem? Use the assignment instructions and reliable course materials to guide that choice.

Rereading can help introduce or clarify material. To find out what you can produce without it in front of you, add a question or task that requires an answer. Familiarity with a page and being able to answer a question are different things to check.

Use retrieval with checking and correction

Retrieval practice means trying to recall previously learned information. The Institute of Education Sciences' explanation of retrieval and interleaving describes its value as a learning strategy.

Choose a few questions from your course. Close the relevant notes, attempt an answer, then compare it with the source or model answer. Check correct-looking answers as well as gaps: a confident answer can still contain an error.

If you cannot answer, reopen the explanation, ask for help or use a worked example. The purpose is to learn and correct, not to remain stuck for as long as possible. You can keep a brief list of questions to revisit, including material you answered correctly but still need to retain.

Alternate examples and attempts

The IES guide to organising instruction and study recommends alternating worked solutions with problem-solving exercises. Its HTML recommendations also cover spacing, retrieval and explanations; evidence ratings vary by recommendation.

For an unfamiliar procedure, start with guidance. Look at what each step does, try a related problem, then check the method and answer. An explanation you say aloud can be useful to inspect, but fluency alone does not prove it is correct.

A simple worked arithmetic example: to add one half and one quarter, express both in quarters: 1/2 + 1/4 = 2/4 + 1/4 = 3/4. A related attempt is 1/3 + 1/6. The checked answer is 2/6 + 1/6 = 3/6 = 1/2.

If that step is unfamiliar, ask why the fractions are being rewritten with a common denominator. These examples illustrate an example–attempt–check sequence; they do not establish that one successful answer means the topic is mastered.

Mix problem types when that fits the course

Mixed practice is a different choice from alternating examples and attempts. It means including different kinds of problems, so you must decide which method each needs. The IES article discusses this particularly in mathematics.

When you have enough initial guidance, use a suitable mixed set from your teacher or course. Before solving, ask what the problem requires. Check errors afterward; an error is a reason to investigate, not automatic evidence that the practice is working. There is no requirement to switch randomly among unrelated subjects.

An optional 60-minute session

The following timing is a planning example, not a researched dose or a requirement. Shorten it, split it or allow more instruction and breaks according to your circumstances.

The total is 5 + 15 + 5 + 25 + 10 = 60 minutes, including the break. The practice block includes checking and explanation, so it is not 25 minutes of uninterrupted retrieval. No amount of learning is inferred from the clock alone.

Return to material over time

The IES practice guide recommends spacing learning. Choose a later review that fits the course and when you will need the material, then adjust after seeing what you can recall and explain. There is no universal day-by-day interval in this plan.

At the next review, try suitable questions before checking the relevant material. Include important content beyond yesterday's mistakes. Ask for guidance if repeated gaps suggest you need a different explanation or more supported practice.

Make the setup usable

If notifications interrupt you, quiet non-essential ones or put the device somewhere less distracting when practical. Keep the technology you need for access, course materials and necessary contact. A paid blocking tool is not required.

Choose breaks and positions that are comfortable for you. There is no requirement to stand, avoid a particular ordinary break activity or push through exhaustion to finish the example schedule.

End with three notes: what you checked, what is still unclear and what you will do next. Those notes make the next session concrete, even when today's plan needs changing.
